Decaying Infrastructure

;    STATUS OF US INFRASTRUCTURE
All things being equal, it would be better for the country to have less debt. Nobody seriously disputes this, but the fact is that all things are not now, and are never really, equal. Today there is a strong argument that it is a wise time to make a strategic investment in U.S. infrastructure.
The World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report for 2013-2014 ranked the United States a respectable No. 5 in term of overall competitiveness. But our prospects for the future are clouded by an infrastructure ranking that barely cracks the top 20. Since this report our infrastructure has declined another 10% we must act now or its state of repair will be disastrous.
On multiple ratings, the U.S. came out on top in exactly one category: the availability of airline travel. Other than that, rankings on the quality of roads (18th), rail (17th), ports (16th) and other measures show it trailing many of its international competitors.
Earlier this year, the American Society of Civil Engineers issued its annual infrastructure report card, and awarded the U.S. a D+ for infrastructure. You can discount the ASCE's findings as you please, considering the fact that civil engineers, as a whole, benefit from increased infrastructure spending, but the numbers are hard to argue with.
A few highlights from the report:
One in four bridges in the U.S. today are either structurally deficient, meaning that their condition has deteriorated to the point that they require annual safety inspections to remain open, or functionally obsolete, which means that they were built to such a low standard that they would be illegal to build today.
•"Almost half of America's public school buildings were built to educate the baby boomers – a generation that is now retiring from the workforce," the report found. Meanwhile, annual spending on school construction fell to $10 billion in 2012, down 50 percent from pre-recession levels.
•Congestion alone on U.S. highways costs the economy $101 billion in fuel and lost productivity every year.
This might be excusable if we were taking the necessary steps to upgrade our existing infrastructure, but we're not, and that's a real problem. These issues are not theoretical or contingent. They are real, their progression is certain, and we know we are going to have to spend money to fix them. Waiting for an emergency will be expensive – both in terms of money spent and productivity lost.

Right now, the Treasury Department can issue 30-year debt for less than 4 percent interest. But last month, Federal Reserve Chairman signaled that economic improvement, slow though it may be, means low rates won't last forever.  Again, all things being equal, less debt would be better. But things aren't equal, and our infrastructure is crumbling, which affects competitiveness, production and GDP.

President Roosevelt's Promise

“We can never insure one hundred percent of the population against one hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life, but we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.”Statement, U.S. President of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, upon signing the Social Security Act, August 14, 1935.

We all come from different walks of life, different regions of the country. We are Washington, DC. We are Appleton, WI. We are Oakland, CA. We are Atlanta, GA. We are represented by those who believe that there isn’t enough gun control, and those that believe there is too much. Some of us believe in climate change, some don’t. We are people of faith, and we are people unaffiliated with any religious tradition.

But we, the members, organizers and supporters of the National Committee, share this fundamental value: That Social Security is a Promise and a promise must be kept.

What is the Social Security Promise?

Social Security was never intended to be an investment program:Instead, it is a contributory social insurance program, designed to protect workers and their families from loss of income due to death, disability or retirement. Social Security is not a needs-based program. Rather, it is a true earned benefit in which people earn the right to participate by working and contributing.

Social Security means life insurance for workers and their families: One in seven Americans will die before reaching age 67. Many workers do not have life insurance to protect their families from the loss of the earnings of their primary breadwinner. What workers may not realize is that paying payroll taxes entitles their families to survivor’s benefits, providing life insurance protection worth over $476,000.

Social Security means disability insurance for workers and their families:Three out of ten of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching age 67. Yet 75% of the private sector workforce has no long-term disability insurance. Individuals with a prior history of medical problems or who work in industries with a high rate of injury frequently find coverage prohibitively expensive or impossible-to-obtain. Many workers don’t realize their payroll taxes are buying them this critical protection.

Social Security is the cornerstone of retirement: From the program’s beginning, it was intended to be a base of protection, one of three legs of the retirement stool, supplemented by private pensions and savings. It was not intended as an individual’s sole source of retirement income. Today, nine out of ten people over age 65 receive Social Security benefits. Nearly two out of three Social Security beneficiaries receive over half their income from Social Security, and it’s the only source of income for nearly one-in-five seniors. Without Social Security, 40% of older Americans would live in poverty.

Why do we keep promises?

Every company makes promises. One fast food company distanced itself from other fast food providers by saying that its food was “slow-cooked”and “hand-prepared.” It’s still fast food.

A shampoo company claims “your hair will outshine the summer’s sun,” but we all know that could never happen.

Some politicians may have gotten so accustomed to making and breaking promises that they think it’s OK. But it’s not. It never is.

A promise is a promise.

What’s the impact of an unkept promise? Gallup research has shown that if customers don’t have a firm foundation of confidence and trust in a brand, customer loyalty erodes. In fact, across an array of brands in six different product categories, Gallup found that customer loyalty plummets an average of 29% if customers do not have a strong belief in the company’s ability and commitment to keep its promises. Loyalty suffers when promises aren’t kept.

Congress needs to keep its promise so that political support for Social Security will not erode.

What is the National Committee’s promise to you?

The National Committee has made a solemn promise to you. We have not wavered. We have not compromised. Nor shall we.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare strongly opposes privatizing Social Security. We believe the Social Security program provides valuable benefits to both retirees and younger workers that privatization would rip away. We all agree that the program faces future challenges, chiefly a modest funding gap; however, we must meet these challenges without dismantling the program, undermining its guarantees, or cutting benefits. Social Security gives the American people a secure, basic income that lasts as long as they live.

We are pledged to preserve it for all generations.

Failure of the Two Party System

The two party system is a failure for America this election leaves us with a dead end choice for our future we need a third party choice. A third party would bring fresh ideas to America not the ones that have been set for a hundred years and by today's economy have not worked and in the last twenty years destroyed the Great American economy. Both parties are talking about eliminating the benefits that the grass root Americans have worked so hard for this is unacceptable. We have become to political passive and settle for status quote and now we have to be strong and say enough is enough and the day of the political rich big cats is over. Damn it why don't you get up and make a change there are many good ideas out there from third choices that are fresh and make sense for ALL Americans.

TAXES

Neither party has a solution for tax reform that would benefit ALL Americans but there Third party Independent solutions that would do just that and put us on the way to a balance budget. reduce debt and preserve our benefits.

BENEFITS

Medicare, Social Security, Help for the needy can all be reformed and benefits bolstered instead of being cut. We can do this by taking a hands off approach of the established funds that can be increased when we get the work force back in business.

JOBS

We can create jobs through common sense. Allow the Keystone pipeline to move forward, invest in our nations infrastructure such as roads, waterways, bridges, and our decaying rail system. Bring back the steel, manufacturing and textile mills because we have the ability to out produce any country in the world and provide Made in America products. Bolster the American farmer and put limits on foreign take over of these farms. American cotton was the best in the world and now it is a dying product in America we can bring back the pride but the political passive needs to speak up. Limit foreign investment in our industries and WE THE PEOPLE need to invest in AMERICA not foreign countries. Prohibit foreign property purchases.

A Failing System ????

The Presidency of the United States used to be an honorable and a prestigious office to hold with the undying respect of of the American people but it has become a place holder for the wealthy and smooth talkers that are full of themselves. They have an agenda that is not in the peoples best interest but their own self serving interest which only profits their well being. This President has done very well by us and has profited greatly financially and will insure a secure future for his family.

On the other hand we have a Congress that is strongly divided by the far right, the far left and most of all by greed coupled with stupidity. The American people deserve better than this but we continue being duped by these smooth talking LIARS and corrupt cheats. The Republicans taking over the Tea Party and moving them to the far right with no regard for the good or well being of the American people who so naively elected them to office. The Democrats have only moved to the left more and are continuing to line their pockets at our expense. Neither party has a solution to our problems and only hold back any bold ideas to move this great country forward.

We need a common sense middle ground party made up of grass root Americans that truly have the peoples interest at heart and will move this country forward and upward once again. A legislature that listens to the woes and cries of the people who so freely put them in office for the privilege of serving the people not screwing them over. The common grass root Americans are becoming the poor and the needy that for so many years we stood up for and helped them try to achieve their American Dream. We need elected officials that will serve us with our interest and needs addressed instead of what is best for them.

American to American

In each one of us burns that flame of freedom that our forefathers, fathers, sons and daughters fought for and some paid the ultimate price. I was one of the lucky ones I survived multiple wounds received in Vietnam but there is not one day I regret my patriotism or my willingness to serve my country it was my honor to do so. I have to ask each one of you when you go to a ball game or you watch an Olympics awards ceremony and they play the National Anthem do you not get the chills or a flushing of patriotism. Well I do and you should also. When Robert Redford hit the home run that shattered the center field lights in the movie the Natural and the music was there so were the chills that's American and those chills are your born in sense of pride in this great country of ours. If you get those chills when seeing our flag and hearing the music then reach down inside and reignite that flame and bring it to the surface lets together make this country Great and Prosperous again. Instill the pride you were born with and let that fire surface again. We can defeat the corruption and greed in Washington elect a true grass roots Independent American and put the bureaucrats in there place (OUT OF OFFICE) We need a good house cleaning NOW. Elect a new Independent congress.
